Our Five Senses - Hearing!

This morning during free choice, friends explore our "sound table" to utilize their sense of hearing.  We create sound cups with various materials we find around the classroom.  We try to vary our sounds by finding light, heavy, soft, small and large items.  Once we create our cups, we shake shake shake to hear the different sounds they make.  How fun!

We hollow out some of our gourds to make boats in our water tables...thanks for the awesome idea, Ms. Amy and Ms. Crystal!

Allie works very hard during quiet choices to put our alphabet puzzle together.  Thomas comes and joins her...and voila!  Awesome job, friends!

Exploring Baking Soda and Vinegar!

Friends use their five (well...four) senses to explore baking soda, vinegar and food coloring today during morning free choice.

We use our sense of hearing, smell, sight and touch to figure out the reaction between the baking soda and vinegar.  "Yuck!  That stuff stinks!" says Hendric.  "Hey, I hear it sizzle," says Aaron.  Colton says, "It looks like a bubbling volcano."  Great observations, Discoverers!

We work with Oobleck (cornstarch and water) to utilize our sense of touch.  We observe that sometimes the mixture feels soft like a liquid and sometimes it feels hard like a solid.  Very interesting!

Thomas uses our alphabet stones during quiet choices.  He spells out both his first and last name.  Way to go, Thomas!

Before we head out for recess, we take a look at our new Science Spin magazine.  How perfect that it is all about the Five Senses!   Ask your child what he/she learned from our activity today.

Too cute not to share!  Colton and Hendric hanging out during recess :)

Wednesday Morning

Some of our Explorer friends join us in the Discovery classroom on Wednesday morning.  Amelia and Kellan build a bear house (complete with furniture) with the magna-tiles.

Discoverers get in on the action and create a bear movie theater.  Wow!  This took some focus and patience!

Our letter F sound circle was a huge success!  We only had one duplicate...nice work everyone!

Using Our Five Senses - Sight!

As part of our "Five Senses" curriculum this week, we use our eyes (the sense of sight) to observe what happens when you mix water colors and oil on both wax paper and tin foil.

So many great discoveries as we check out the relationship between oil and water...so cool!

Aaron, Colton and Hendric use the magnet stick and balls during morning free choice.  They soon discover that our heater is made of metal and these magnetic materials stick to them.  How cool to build on a vertical surface like this!

Friends take turns doing "belly flops" off the stairs of our structure during morning recess.  It was a chilly morning out there, but that didn't slow us down one bit!
